The 'Space Workshop' series grew out of a lesson plan we developed for secondary school students. The aim was to engage with this age group in thinking about democratic access to public spaces. The lesson plan was tested with the 10th graders of the Szilágyi Erzsébet Secondary School. Working together for five weeks, we learned about the positive and negative aspects of the schoolyard, which they couldn’t use because of the school administration. Through problem mapping, situational exercises, mock-ups and brainstorming, we defined some improvement opportunities. After the preparatory work, we spent a Saturday together building the structure that the children had invented. I hope that the programme will be a signal to the school administration that the children want to use the courtyard, they can actively take care of it and make decisions about it.
