This proposal for a cultural center in central Debrecen responds to the challenges of today’s built environment: limited space, overdevelopment, and the demand for sustainable, measured architectural solutions. The project follows a practical, resourceful design approach. It aims to create a flexible space that supports cultural activity with minimal intervention. Rather than building new, we focus on adapting existing structures, preserving the site's architectural layers, and reclaiming value in what is already there.
The existing courtyard is constrained by inherited firewalls and extensions. To improve usability without overbuilding, we propose the partial removal of a rear wing, opening up the courtyard to create a functional central space that connects the buildings. Most new functions are integrated into the existing buildings. The only new structure is a lightweight polycarbonate pavilion in the garden, which houses secondary functions  such as a staircase, cloakroom, restrooms and stage.
